The complex interdependencies between signalling, telecommunications and other safety-critical railway equipment pose constant challenges to infrastructure managers, operators and manufacturers. It is therefore essential to ensure that the objectives of safety, performance, quality and interoperability are met as cost-effectively as possible.

Third party assessment ensures all parties involved, starting with the client, that these critical systems operate safely and reliably.Italcertifer is able to provide the resources and expertise required to ensure that any signalling project (both trackside and on-board) meets all the objectives of safety, performance, quality and interoperability.

Italcertifer's know-how in rail signalling, both on board and trackside, derives from its participation as assessor in all the main projects for the implementation of signalling systems on Italian high-speed and conventional lines, in particular the projects that have provided for the introduction of ERTMS/ETCS systems.

Italcertifer as an independent third party assessor is able to offer the following services:

  • Conformity assessments of interoperability constituents and EC verifications of the control-Command and signalling (CCS) on-board and trackside subsystems according to EU Directives and national rules;
  • Independent Safety Assessment of generic products and generic and specific applications in accordance with CENELEC 50126, 50128 and 50129 as well as all relevant specifications for trackside and on-board equipment;
  • Test witnessing of signalling equipment;
  • Independent quality and safety audit.

Outside the scope of Italian and European legislation, Italcertifer carries out conformity assessments for the infrastructure subsystem such as Independent Safety AssessorIndependent Competent Person (ICP), Independent Checking Engineer e Safety Verification Engineer.

Irrespective of the scope of application, assessment activities are carried out applying the same methodologies and the same degree of professionalism, independence and impartiality for the purpose of making sound and objective technical judgments.
