Notified bodies are conformity assessment bodies which have been officially designated by their national authority to carry out the procedures for conformity assessment within the meaning of applicable Union harmonisation legislation when a third party is required.

They are referred to as "notified bodies" under EU legislation because they are notified to the European Commission by being entered in the "NANDO" official register.

In the case of railway interoperability, the reference legislation is Directive 2016/797/EU.

Italcertifer, as a notified body, is accountable to the competent national authority as it takes on responsibilities in sectors of public interest and in an area, which has a direct impact on the safety of EU citizens.

Italcertifer activity as a Notified Body (NoBo) involves the assessment of railway subsystems and interoperability constituents in order to certify their compliance with the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) and issue the relative "EC Verification Certificates". Specifically, it provides for:

  • The Assessment of conformity to TSIs for Interoperability constituents;
  • Assessment of suitability for use of interoperability constituents;
  • EC verification for all subsystems covered by the TSIs.
